Vintage only for me...I may be wrong, but I don't think the quality is anywhere near Hot Wheels these days.
EDIT: For reference, this is a 1962 model. It looks played with because it was. My dad gave this to me somewhat recently.

Hipster! Just kidding. 90s Matchbox were ok in terms of quality. Probably right under HW. But certainly not the worst. Hell, I think at that point they were owned by the same company and both made in Malaysia so it probably came down to what material was used for the chassis. I think all MB were plastic, and the vast majority of HW were metal. For some reason I remember MB having suspensions which I thought was cool. MB did have a nicer line in the 90s too. I had a few of them, I remember a Tahoe and a 5 series. They had nice casts, realistic paint/decals/colors, rubber tires, suspension, and (if I recall) opening doors. They even came in a box like the one you pictured.

I prefered the Matchbox to the Hot Wheels as they were more detailed, yet the Corgi and Bburago were far more detailed again.
The Bburago I'll always remember was the Lancia Aurelia b24 Spider. It had moveable bonnet, boot, seats and you could steer the front wheels with the steering wheel.
One day I'll own a real one just like it.

When the semester is finally over, I'll make a short video of some of the antique car toys we have. I need an excuse to diversify my reel anyway. Things like a 1968 Shelby Cobra badge to a wind up #5 car. We have a healthy obsession with "vintage" in this house. Some of the "collectibles" are things that date back longer than my parents can even remember. The car stuff, which interests me most, is spread all over in little bits here and there.
The BMW I showed you is one of those things. There's a Mercedes RC, a Lunchbox RC, and some already mentioned wind up cars and the like. I'll post another teaser tomorrow, how's that?

I always found late 90s to current Matchbox better. Firstly, realistic wheels and paintjobs. Hotwheels makes nice cars but ruins them with wacky paintjobs and tampos. Heck, even if they leave a car in a single paint shade, they end up ruining it with the rims. I collect both, but Matchbox over HW anyday for me. Not much of a Lesney edition fan. Those cars are only good from a historic POV, very less details on them.
